On Thursday 30th May, there's going to be a by-election in Kingstanding following the resignation of the sitting Tory councillor. This is at the same time as the Labour-run council are pressing ahead with a raft of £300m worth of cuts to Birmingham's services, the largest ever in history.
While luxury apartments are shooting up in the city centre, social housing has been left to decline in Kingstanding and many other working class suburbs in Brum. 1/3 of councillors in Birmingham own rental properties – no wonder Labour, Tories and Lib Dems all lack the will to cap skyrocketing rents or tackle dodgy landlords.
With thousands of people asking “who can I vote for”, local trade union activist and public transport worker Kris O’Sullivan is standing in this by-election.
Kris is a long-standing campaigner in North Birmingham, supporting pickets, protests and canvassing by homecare and bin workers in 2017-19 when the Labour council tried to attack jobs and pay. He has been a fixture on picket lines where workers and tenants have fought back over recent years, and took part in community vigils and protests in Kingstanding against racism and division in 2021 and 2022.
Kris says: “From local high streets to mass protests to picket lines I’ve spoken to workers from all backgrounds and all walks of lives who have all said the same thing – we need a political alternative.”
