Anti-Austerity group to challenge Labour in Birmingham

A group of anti-austerity campaigners are preparing to stand in Birmingham’s local elections in May.

They intend to contest at least a quarter of the City’s seats and that together with like-minded people in the City, hope to contest half of the city’s wards.

Standing as part of a new political party the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC), the campaigners pledge to oppose the coalition government’s austerity programme and vote against cuts to local jobs and services if elected.

Instead councillors would put forward a budget which meets the needs of the people of Birmingham and build a city-wide campaign to pressure the government to provide the necessary funds to pay for it.

Acocks Green candidate Eamonn Flynn said: “The government’s austerity policies hit working class people the hardest and are doing serious damage to our community. The Labour council have refused to lift a finger to defend our local services and are in effect doing the Tories’ dirty work for them. We feel that enough is enough and someone has to make a stand. That’s why we are standing the biggest ever slate of anti-cuts and socialist candidates in Birmingham. We hope that by uniting local campaigns to save libraries and swimming pools etc with fighting political representatives we will be in a stronger position to defeat the government’s austerity programme.”

Prominent former West Midlands Labour MP Dave Nellist, national chair of TUSC  said:

“Working people are increasingly fed up with establishment politicians who live in a different world to us. We urge anti cuts campaigners, trades unionists and socialists to join us as part of the biggest left of Labour electoral challenge for many years. And we urge people to give their support to a party that will be a voice for them, not the wealthy establishment. A Party for the millions, not the millionaires”
