Campaigning To Defend The NHS

January 29, 2017

The last 12 months have been the worst in the history of the NHS. It's under pressure like never before. The crisis moment many warned of has arrived. According to Dr Stokes Lampard, chair of the Royal College of GPs, the NHS is facing a 'tipping point'.

Accident and Emergency departments (A&Es) represent an early warning sign that the health service is under pressure. Currently, England's major A&Es are under record strain with 'black alerts' being regularly sounded, and in some instances wards turning patients away.

So what has been the response of the government to this crisis?

You'll be delighted to know that over the past year they've been quietly developing proposals under the title of 'Sustainability and Transformation Plans' (STPs) - in reality a plan for £22bn worth of cuts to the NHS nationally.

In the face of these Tory attacks on our health service, Socialist Party members in Birmingham have been holding campaigning stalls week in week out. We've been putting the case, that rather than implementing cuts, introducing charges or blaming so called 'health tourism', the government should instead collect the £120bn annually that is evaded in tax by large corporations and the super-rich to properly fund the NHS and other public services.

You can get involved too - on March 4th, a national demonstration called by health campaigners from across the country will march on Westminster. We'll be organising cheap transport down to London - for more info, and to book a space on the coach, get in touch
