Since the 7th of October, protests in support of Palestine have been nonstop, and this past Saturday was another powerful demonstration of solidarity for our Palestinian brothers and sisters.
People from all walks of life came and stood together displaying an unwavering commitment to a free and independent Palestine with an end to Israeli military occupation and the killing of the innocent.
Even though the temperature was high, you could feel a sense of purpose amongst the protestors. More than 400 people have gathered in Sparkhill, Birmingham, either on their own or with family and friends. Whilst handing out leaflets, I met people from Doncaster, saw the Irish flag rise, and the symbol of the Liver Bird soar through the skies as we marched to the city. Demonstrating the multicultural support for the liberation of the Palestinian people.
I was lucky to speak to many individuals at the protest whilst handing out leaflets for the Socialist Party. All of them were in good spirit, you could see the passion and love that they had for the cause. Happy to be there, to be part of something bigger.
The announcement of a new party led by Zarah Sultana provides a sense of direction and hope for the anti war movement having a political expression.
On some recent protests, there have been issues with the police harassing protesters and arresting them for nonsensical reasons, egged on by Starmer and home secretary Yvette Cooper. On Saturday there was an occasion where the police manhandled an individual with a T-shirt calling out the IDF but he was not arrested after many of the protestors intervened.
The protest has shown how united people are in the face of a Labour government that is becoming more authoritarian every day as it supports war and imperialism in the Middle East while oppressing workers and the most vulnerable in Britain.
